Live Brief - LoopDeLoop

For my live brief project, I have chosen to do LoopDeLoop's theme "Shoe".

My idea was to have a ghost tying his shoe until he realises that he has phased through it.

This does not stop him from trying again and again and again...

Moodboard

At the beginning of this project, I collected some images for what I thought would help with my character's designs.

I wanted my character to be a ghost that was inspired by a candle. This made me think of the Pokemon Litwick, but I also wished to add an element of comedy. This brought me to the "Lonesome Ghosts" cartoon.

I then began to think of how this cartoon could inspire the design and so I began to look into the game Cuphead as it has a similar look to the character I wanted to create.

Concept Sketches

Before I got a good grasp of the character, I thought that I would play around with his personality to see what variations I could come up with. I wasn't a fan of the design on the far left as it looked far too generic and emotionless.

The second attempt turned out a lot better as he has a lot more character. This sketch helped me see that I wanted the ghost to be rather fed up with tying his shoe.

Style Experimentation

Before beginning the animation and storyboard, I wanted to settle on a style. At first I thought about trying to have it fit in more with the entries of LoopDeLoop, I decided to use the style that looked best for the humour and style I was going for.

Storyboard

The idea for this animation is inspired by 1930's slapstick humour. A lot of it is squash and stretch and so he only has traces of bones. The candle on his head shall flicker throughout the animation.

LoopdeLoop Final Videos

I decided to change the frame rate for the video as I thought that it moved too fast. However, I then realised that it was maybe a little bit too slow but this was after submitting it. If I could change the speed before submitting it to LoopdeLoop I would have but unfortunately my entry was already recorded. In future, I hope to improve my pacing and camera angles as well as the fluidity of my characters. In addition, I believe that this animation would have benefitted heavily from more frames. I additionally wish to start animating sooner so that I can improve my technique before starting the lineart.
